Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP is pleased to announce that Deepan Patel has joined the firm in its Orlando office as of counsel. Patel focuses his practice on affordable housing, financial strategies such as hedging arrangements, and international tax matters. He has broad experience with implementing tax planning transactions strategies to optimize business operations and minimize U.S. and foreign tax liabilities on domestic and international investments.
In his previous role with the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s IRS Office of Chief Counsel, Patel provided legal advice and litigation support on tax matters involving financial institutions and the taxation of financial products. He prepared legislative proposals, treasury regulations, revenue rulings, revenue procedures, IRS notices, actions on decisions, and other public and private guidance related to the financial sector and capital markets. Patel co-authored the final regulations under § 451(b) (T.D. 9941), as amended by the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, regarding the timing of income which was awarded outstanding published technical guidance in 2021.
Patel also served as senior manager at the national tax office of a Big 4 accounting firm where he advised clients on international tax matters including global structuring, mergers, acquisitions, reorganizations, liquidations, financing arrangements, intellectual property planning, tax treaties, transfer pricing methodology, U.S. trade or business analysis, and tax filing obligations. He also has experience navigating clients through IRS processes and procedures to facilitate compliance, drive negotiation, resolve issues, and strategize forward planning.
Patel earned his JD from Florida State University College of Law as well as a Faculty of Law from the University of Oxford and a BS from Florida State University.
